Paver Patio Drainage: The Detail That Makes or Breaks Your Patio
Almost every failed patio we are called to fix died the same way: water. What proper drainage and base prep look like in Central Ohio clay soil.

Nobody calls us excited to talk about gravel compaction. But of all the patios we are asked to repair around Columbus, nearly every failure traces to the same cause: water in the wrong place, freezing and thawing thirty-plus times a winter.
Central Ohio sits on heavy clay. Clay holds water, water expands when it freezes, and a patio built on a thin or poorly compacted base will heave, settle, and ripple within a few seasons. The pavers on top were never the problem.
What a patio built for this climate looks like
- Excavation to stable subgrade. Topsoil out, organic material out. The depth depends on the site, not a one-size spec.
- Geotextile fabric over the clay. Keeps the stone base from slowly pumping down into wet clay over the years. Cheap insurance, routinely skipped.
- Compacted open-graded stone base, in lifts. Compacted a few inches at a time, not dumped and topped. This is the step that separates a 20-year patio from a 5-year patio, and it is invisible the day after the job is done.
- Pitch away from the house. Roughly a quarter inch per foot, every direction verified, so storm water never sheets toward your foundation.
- Somewhere for the water to go. Downspouts routed under the patio in solid pipe to daylight or a drain, never dumped at the patio edge. On flat lots, a French drain or catch basin does the quiet heavy lifting.
Questions to ask any patio bidder
- How deep is the excavation, and what determines it?
- Open-graded or dense-graded base, and why?
- Will downspouts be re-routed, and where to?
- What is the compaction process, in lifts of how many inches?
A contractor who answers those four crisply is bidding the same project we would. A contractor who pivots to paver colors is bidding a different one.
Weighing a patio against a deck for your yard? That decision has its own logic, covered in deck versus patio.
