When to Book Your Summer Outdoor Build (Earlier Than You Think)
The patio you want to enjoy in July gets designed in winter. A look at the real construction calendar in Central Ohio, from first call to first cookout.
Every June, we take calls from homeowners who want a patio for a graduation party in three weeks. We feel genuinely bad about these calls, because the project is usually buildable, just not by then. Here is the calendar nobody shows you.
The real timeline, working backward from a July cookout
- Build window: late spring. Most patio and pergola projects take days to a few weeks on site once started.
- Before that: permits and HOA. Weeks to a couple of months depending on scope and municipality. Pool houses with plumbing sit at the long end; see our permit guide.
- Before that: design and material lead times. Custom designs take iterations, and some materials, notably louvered pergola systems and specialty stone, carry real lead times.
- Before that: getting on the schedule. Quality crews book their summer by spring. This is true of every good builder in Columbus, not just us.
Add it up and the comfortable math is: a summer build starts as a conversation in winter or very early spring. January consultations become June patios. April consultations become September patios, which are lovely too, but the party will be on the lawn.
Why off-season planning is actually an advantage
- Design without deadline pressure. The best decisions on our projects happen when nobody is racing the calendar.
- First pick of the schedule. Early commitments choose their construction window instead of taking what is left.
- Winter site visits show the truth. Drainage problems, sun angles, and sightlines are easier to read without summer foliage flattering the yard.
- Phased projects can stage. Earthwork in late fall sets up a fast spring start, a sequencing trick straight from the master plan playbook.
